Liquidation Logistics & Shipping

Most surplus liquidators will provide shipping services to get your merchandise to you. The selling company will add freight costs to each purchase. Some companies deal in volume and can offer a better rate than you can get. Other companies charge a fair fee above what the freight actually costs. Other companies overcharge for freight costs, it's their way of making extra money from unsuspecting buyers.

If you are ordering surplus, closeout or liquidation merchandise by the carton it usually ships through common carrier such as UPS or Fedex. If your ordering a pallet of items then it's up to the liquidator how it will ship. Sometimes they will break it up into cartons and ship it through common carrier, sometimes they will ship the pallet through a freight company that will accept LTL (less than truckload). A pallet is also called a skid and is made of wood. Pallets are a frame that boxes sit on and allow a forklift to move the stack of boxes without damaging the boxes or cartons of merchandise.

Secret Tip - It's always good to do your homework and call a few freight companies for a quote to see if the shipping you are being charged is inline with the actual cost. Most freight is determined by weight and destination so it's good to have those ready when calling for a quote.

Secret Tip - Find a good freight company to build a relationship with and arrange for your own freight. You'll have more control over your shipment and the costs. Always ask about hidden costs like delivering to a residence opposed to a business address. Also will the truck have a lift gate and is that an extra charge? Does the company make appointments? Will the truck driver help unload the merchandise? Will you need a forklift to unload the truck or will the truck have a pallet jack and is there an extra charge for those?

If you're buying a Truckload of liquidation merchandise the tractor-trailer containers vary from 40 feet to 53 feet long and usually fit 22-24 pallets. If you are arranging for a truckload of merchandise to be picked up by your own freight company its important to ask if they need an appointment for pickup. Will the merchandise be loaded onto pallets and be shrinkwrapped? How many pallets are in the load? Do they have a loading dock or will the truck need a lift gate, pallet jack, forklift, etc.
